Mohegan Sun Casino - Sr. Software Architect

March 2010 – October 2012

Inherited an enterprise in crisis that in many cases was asking the wrong questions and acting on dubious conclusions. The mid-tier applications suite was a major area of concern as was the supporting infrastructure.

Collaborated on a strategy of rapidly pruning technology that had gone bad resulting in a significant savings in licensing fees. Successfully advocated that the Pocono Downs Casino adopt an IBM infrastructure that mirrored Mohegan Sun's allowing both Casinos to begin a process of mutually advantageous development that could be further cloned.

Significant savings ensued by the elimination of unneeded maintenance contracts and more. Significant progress was and is being achieved despite deeply entrenched, reluctant IT resources.

Created an architectural framework for existing casino technologies and yearly roadmaps for future product development that included a yearlong upgrade effort that brought the Casino software infrastructure up to date and far more efficient. Introduced SOA, Jira, Drools, Spring, Ice Faces, Java 5, Websphere Servers 7.x, DB2 9.x, MULE, Alfresco, and numerous superior development practices to the Casino.

Coded and disseminated reference models for the refactoring of existing code, introductions to Java 5/6, Spring framework, Hadoop, Drools, and Mule. Created an information model for capturing customer preferences toward creating an ambient dataStore. Performed product evaluation and recommendations for IceFaces, CRM, Hotelier applications, content management, signage, kiosks, ticketing management, and more. Served as the Gartner Technical Services interface.

Hardened the enterprise infrastructure. Responsible for successfully directing the implementation of multiple applications that were previously thought impossible given their track records of failure. Worked on proposals for many more.

Helped reform project management practice by promoting lean and agile business and development processes that emphasized end to end quality improvement. Brought a runaway IS budget under control that returned significant unspent money back to the Tribe.

Designed an innovative promotion engine that processed Points and Comps heuristically.

Advocated that the Casino become an ambient entertainment venue that more accurately served its Patrons both in service and atmosphere.
